Olympic Day Miss Cook and her sixth grade students planned a
wonderful Olympic Day for the students in K-2. The event could not have
occurred on a more beautiful day. The sun and cool breeze, the fun
events, and the great sportsmanship and cooperation displayed by all the
students combined to make this a memorable day for all those involved.
Thanks Miss Cook for all you did to provide this rewarding experience to
the primary students.

Mr. Sandvig Makes a Splash in Kindergarten! It looks like the
students are going swimming in an indoor
swimming pool. They have the pool, they have the goggles, and they have
the sun. But they don't have a swimsuit. Only a scientist can take all
these materials and prepare the solution to make a large bubble that
covers an entire kid. Thank you Mr. Sandvig for teaching students to
LOVE science.

Civil
War Debate Mrs. Hollinshead's students treated Mrs. Helms
class to a Civil War Debate. The students took on the characters of the
principal leaders on both sides of the war. The students
have participated in an extended study of the Civil War throughout this
year. They were articulate, concise, and clear on their positions
and answered some really tough question from the perspective of the
character they were role playing.

Olympic Days at CCS: Mr. Reynolds,
Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Dumont provided our 3rd and 4th grade and 5th
and 6th grade students and teachers day filled with many athletic
activities. We commend our students for their sportsmanship throughout
the day. We do wish we had their youthful energy! We also appreciate
how our teachers work together to provide our students with wonderful
opportunities that become tradition. Olympic Day is truly a favorite

- Great music, fun stories, spectacular dancing routines and more.
I think the future of CCS stage productions is in great hand based upon
the performances at this morning's Kindergarten Graduation ceremony. The
students took the audience around the world with songs, dances and
stories from many different countries. The event was topped off with a
graduation ceremony including diplomas. Congratulations to all the
students and their teachers for all their hard work. Here are nearly 190
picture. I think I got everyone. Enjoy.

- The 3rd grade classes from CCS went to Pre-historic world this
afternoon. I sent a camera with my son who grabbed a few images of his
friends, the scenery and a bit more. The students were split onto
groups so he did not get a chance to get too many pictures of many
different students. If anyone else took pictures and would like to share
them, please send them in.

their annual dinner banquet. Three CCS students were honored at the
event for their hard work in the group. Brennan Secore was awarded
"Most Improved", his broth Josh Secore was presented with "Best Spirit"
and Joshua Trombley was given "Best Sparring". The two older boys were
also honored for their work during testing session when other students
go for their belts. They were given the title the "Dead Meat Squad".
Congrats to all the boys. Click to enlarge the pictures. As always, if
you have pictures of CCS students showing off their talents, let me know

- A group of students from CCS recently attended the Very Special
Arts Festival at Maxy Hall in Potsdam. The students discussed some of
their favorite stories related to the sea in a presentation entitled
"Catch a Wave for an Ocean of Great Books". Their presentation earned
the students a 1st place trophy, certificates and t-shirts. The
students learned about their achievement after the morning assembly on
Wednesday. Mrs. Folwer presented each participating student with a
certificate. We are always very proud of our students and awards like
this just add to our pride. Congratulations to the students and their
teachers.

3/31/06 A Wedding to Remember! Q and U
marry and become Mr. and Mrs. QU. A Chateaugay
Kindergarten Tradition lives on. Many quests attended the beautiful
spring wedding of Q and U! There was the royal exchange of the vows,
dancing and merry-making...(my thighs hurt for the entire weekend from
doing the Chicken Dance) and a lovely reception that followed the
ceremony. A special thank you to Trey Barnes and his family for
providing the flowers for the Queen and ladies of the court. Thank you
to all who joined this festive ceremony! I dare say that you will see
previous Kings and Queens and various members of previous wedding
parties in attendance. You'll also notice that we are all having quite

Wood's Sugar House: A Sweet Visit! Mr. Bill Wood gave our
kindergarten students, teachers, and parents an amazing tour of his
Maple Sugar Bush, his Sugar House, and the Maple Sugar process... from
the tree tap to our very own container of the sweetest tasting maple
syrup. We learned that the process of making maple syrup takes a lot of
work. Mr. Wood is passionate about each stage of the sugaring process.
It will be evident to everyone when you view the pictures that he enjoys
sharing his knowledge. He also was very generous in sharing his
valuable time and his valuable product with our students. We truly
enjoyed our visit! When you see Mr. Wood, please make sure to say
thanks for the delicious syrup!

- Mrs. Gratto invited Mrs. Pageau's third grade class to her high
school science room to learn about rocks, minerals and fossils...a
subject near and dear to Mrs. Gratto's heart. Mrs. Gratto showed the
children many examples of minerals found in our daily lives. She had
them test the hardness of some minerals, and quartz was found to be the
hardest of the ones in her classroom. Then, while learning about the
layers of the Earth where minerals are found, the children dine on cups
of layered pudding that represented the Earth's layers, complete with a
gummy worm on top. The students really enjoyed being invited upstairs
and Mrs. Gratto's enthusiasm was contagious.

Mrs. Sherry Wheeler, student teacher in Mrs. Butterfield's classroom has
been teaching the students an Inventions and Discoveries unit. The
children are learning how new inventions and discoveries have changed
the way we live.
One part of the unit involved interviewing a grandparent, parent,
or another adult to find out what inventions or discoveries impacted
their lives when they were young. The pictures that follow are from an
interview Mrs. Wheeler conducted with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin
and Mary Lynne Baldwin. Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin were gracious to allow
Mrs. Wheeler to interview them in front of the class. This allowed the
students to see how they could interview their grandparents, or parents,
or another adult.
The students were very interested to learn how electricity impacted
Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin's lives. They were amazed that Mr. Baldwin went to
a one-room school house when he was in third grade. Next week the
students will be presenting their interview information. We can hardly
wait to learn about the inventions and discoveries that have impacted
families in Chateaugay.

Elementary students in 4th and 5th grade hit the slopes at Titus
Mountain on Friday, March 3, 2006. They had a tremendous amount of
support from Ski Club members. With the help of Mrs. Kelting, Mr.
Quinn, Mrs. Deans, and Mrs. Parmeter, the high school students were
given a group of four or five students to teach. The Ski Club members
taught the students how to put on their boots and skis (harder than you
think) walk up a hill (harder than you think) how to stop (harder than
you think), and how to use the rope tow, the chair lift, and how (also,
harder than you think) to just have an amazing amount of fun (not
difficult at all!)! By early afternoon, every child w as
off the bunny hill and moving up the mountain to try out all the skills
they had been practicing. Of course we all loved the Lodge. Eating
seems to be a favorite past time of all our kids.
We wish to thank all the Ski Club members for exhibiting
incredible patience in their teaching. The following members provided
invaluable support for the entire day: Montana Cassavaw, Justin
Corcoran, Kyle Demers, Eric Dwyer, Margaret Empsall, Patti
Gillmett-Legacy, Trent Hanley, Shane Harrigan, Emily Jackson, Erika
LaBombard, Lynn Leach, Bruce Leavitt, Lindsey Legacy, Chelsea Quimet,
Josh Patnode, Rachel Shutts, Briana Stark, Doug Tetreault, Brad Titus,
Laura Trudell, Shantell Vermette, and Kristen Walton. These ski members
ski very well. That provided motivation and inspiration, too!
As were were leaving Titus
Mountain, Rachel Cook had the best quote, " I'm going to ask my parents
to bring me back!" We do hope that many parents will take the time one
weekend soon to go see what your child was able to accomplish. You will
be proud and blown away by your child's accomplishments. Mrs. Boyea,
Mrs. Jones, Miss Helm, Mrs. Hollinshead, and Mrs. Fowler enjoyed
watching the children build confidence and courage as they developed new
skills.

3/1/06 - On Friday,
March 3rd, 2006, the fourth and fifth grade students of
Chateaugay Central School, as an extension of the
Elementary Physical Education Curriculum will take part
in an introductory skiing program offered at Titus
Mountain Ski Center, outside Malone, NY. Certified Ski
Instructors from Titus Mountain will provide downhill
ski lessons to our students based on their ability
levels. We plan to leave Chateaugay Central at 8:30am
and return by 2:00pm.
Each student will be fitted with skis and boots. The
students will then be divided into small groups for
their lessons on the beginner's hill. Students with
season passes will be able to ski on other trails. They
must have a note from a parent stating that they may do
so. Students taking lessons may be allowed to use other
trails if the ski instructor feels that they are ready
to do so.
The C.C.S. cafeteria staff will provide each student
with a bag lunch and milk (at no cost). However, your
child may buy lunch at the ski area if they wish. Lunch
bought at the ski area will cost about $5.00. There are
no other costs to the student.
- It is very important
that the students dress warmly. We suggest the
following:
- hat or toque (should
cover ears) warm jacket
- ski pants or bib
overalls to keep the body dry and protected from the
wind (Blue jeans are not recommended for outerwear)
- long underwear
- warm socks (one to two
layers depending on type) (1 of wool is best)
- warm boots to wear to
and from the Ski Center
- warm mittens or gloves
If any students have
their own equipment, parents must be responsible for
bringing it to school and home again because ski
equipment cannot be transported on the regular bus runs.
In the event of inclement weather, rain or freezing
temperatures, the field trip will be cancelled and
rescheduled later. If the trip is cancelled, we will try
to have it announced that morning over the WICY radio
station, if possible.
The 4th and 5th grade teachers, along with a group of
high school students, will assist the students with
their skis, lessons, and offer encouragement.
If you have any questions or need more information,
please call 497-6611.
Sincerely,
Heather Deans Mrs. Jane Kelting Mr. Pat Quinn 4th & 5th

Mr. Sean Bailey visited Mrs. Lobdell's second grade
classroom to share a memory making Blue Bird House
project with his son, Neil, and all Neil's classmates.
Unfortunately with the inclement weather and treacherous
road conditions on Friday, February 17, Neil's mom,
Lisa, was unable to assist with the project. This
project coincided with the second grade State Bird
study. Did you know that the New York State Bird was a
bluebird? I don't think these students will ever
forget. There will be more opportunities for bluebirds
to find a new home this spring because every student
made his and her own project. Thanks Mr. Bailey for
bringing your talents into our school!

11/22/05 - Do you
know how much ten dollars worth of pennies weigh? Mrs.
Hollinshead's 5th Grade class doea. They collected
pennies for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The
students began collecting pennies in mid-September
after discussing ways to help the disaster relief
effort. What began as a class project escalated into a
penny drive through all the classrooms. Contests were
held involving penny trivia. ($10.00 in pennies weighs
8 pounds)
The collection ended on October 31 and the long process
of wrapping pennies began. The 5th graders wrapped
pennies before school, at lunchtime, during recess, and
after school. Mrs. Boyea and Mrs. Jones's 4th graders
pitched in to help. The final count - $436.00. Members
of the custodial staff, Mr. Burgoyne and Mr. Hill,
helped the students pack the money into the school van
for a trip to the bank. The money weighed approximately
350 pounds. The employees at the Community Bank in
Chateaugay were happy to make room in their vault for
the coins. A check, earmarked for hurricane relief, was
presented to the American Red Cross. The 5th graders
would like to thank all who helped out with this
effort.
