Welcome to Mrs. Jones' Fourth Grade Home Page.  On our page, you can read about what we've been doing in class.  You can also look up homework assignments and find our weekly "Friday Letters".  Spelling lists are posted weekly, as well.  Any feedback is always appreciated.   I also welcome any questions or concerns.  You may e-mail me at mjones@mail.fehb.org

ANNOUNCEMENTS

I hope that everyone has a wonderful summer!  It has been a great year.  I wish the fourth graders much success next year in fifth grade!

 SPELLING LIST

BOX TOPS AND PRINTER CARTRIDGES

We are collecting BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION.  These BOX TOPS can be found on General Mills cereals, on Betty Crocker products, and on a number of other products.  The school receives 10 cents for each BOX TOP.  Please send BOX TOPS in to school with your child.

The school is also collecting used printer cartridges.  Please send in empty cartridges instead of throwing them away!

DOUBLE DISMISSAL

Please note that DOUBLE DISMISSAL time is considered part of the regular school day.  If your child stays for DOUBLE, he/she is not “staying after”.  Please make sure that your child understands that.

DOUBLE DISMISSAL is used, among other things, to provide AIS services in Math and Reading and to provide extra help and support in each of the subject areas.  Children may also stay for DOUBLE to get caught up with their work or to complete their homework.

All children are welcome to stay, on any given day, for DOUBLE to receive extra help.  The expectation, however, is that they spend DOUBLE working silently at their desks, except, of course, when asking for help.

Sometimes, because of a meeting or other commitment, it is necessary for me to send all children home on the first bus run.  I will let you know ahead of time, if your child will not be staying for DOUBLE on one of his/her scheduled days.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be posted here daily.  Unfortunately, some days I do forget to post the homework.  On those days, please feel free to call me, at home, to ask about assignments.

General Rules and Procedures of the Classroom

Attendance Policy:  The attendance policy was outlined in the CCS Student/Parent Handbook.  It is important, if your child is tardy or absent, that you send in a note which explains the absence or tardiness.
ELA/Math/Science Tests:  As you probably know, your child will be taking New York State tests, this year, in the areas of English/Language Arts, Math, and Science.  Information about these tests will be given at our parent informational meeting.

Signing In/Signing Out/End of the Day:  All parents/visitors must sign in with the elementary office upon arrival to school and departure from school.  The only time that this is not necessary is at the very end of the day, at dismissal time.

If it is necessary to pick up your child early because of an appointment, please go to the elementary office.  You will need to sign your child out and then wait for him/her to meet you there.

If you pick up your child from school at the end of the day, please wait in the cafeteria.  Upon dismissal, your child will meet you there.  Please do not come into the classroom to get your child.  We work right up until the end of the day.  Interruptions are disruptive.

Bus Safety:  We have reviewed bus safety rules.  Please talk to your child about proper conduct on the bus.
School Supplies:  A list of school supplies your child will need for this year was mailed to you a few weeks ago.  I may send additional requests periodically throughout the year.  If you have not yet sent in the requested supplies, please do so as soon as possible.
Rules:  All children are expected to follow the rules of the classroom.  I have read and discussed our rules with the class.  The children know what is expected of them.  They also know that there are consequences for choosing not to follow the rules.  I will keep you informed of any problems that may arise.  I sent a list of our classroom rules home with each child.  Please review these rules with your child and then sign and return the bottom of the page to school.

Double Dismissal:  Double Dismissal time will be used to provide children with extra help, to help children to get caught up with their work, or to work on projects.  At times, I will keep only a few children.  At other times, I may keep the entire class.

Snack:  We will be having a snack time this year.  I have found that snack is easiest when all children have the same thing.  It alleviates the problems of a forgotten snack and “trading”.

I will send a “snack schedule” home at the beginning of each month.  On your child’s snack day, please send in a snack that can be shared with the entire class.  There are 16 children in the class.  Please do not feel as though you need to bake something for your child’s snack day.  Store bought items are fine.  Please do not send in microwave popcorn or things that demand a lot of in-class preparation.  Please consider sending in a healthy snack on your child's snack day.

Occasionally, children forget to bring in a snack on their day.  I ask that, if you do forget, you send in a packaged item that can be used on the next day that someone forgets.

Water Bottles:  We do not have a water fountain in our room.  I have told the children, therefore, that they may keep water bottles at their desks, if they would like.

Specials:  A copy of your child’s “specials” schedule was sent home.  Please make sure that your child is appropriately dressed on P.E. days.

Saxon Math:  A letter that outlines the general components of the Saxon Math program was sent home.  Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions regarding Saxon.

Book-It:  Our class will be participating in the Book-It program beginning from October-March.  I will send information about Book-It at the beginning of each month.
Spelling:  The children will have a list of spelling words each week.  Spelling lists will be sent home on Mondays.  Your child should study and practice his/her words each night.  Spelling tests will be given on Fridays.  For your convenience, our spelling lists will also be posted on our classroom web page.
Homework:  Each child in the class has an “agenda book”.  This book serves as an assignment book for your child.  I will be assigning homework throughout the year.  The children will be responsible for writing their assignments in their agendas.  I expect the children to complete all homework assigned to them.  I will plan assignments so that they should take no longer than about 30 minutes to complete.  Please let me know if your child’s homework is taking a substantially longer period of time than that.
Tests:  Weekly tests will be given in math.  Unit tests will be given in the areas of Social Studies and Science.    I will send home, before each Social Studies and Science test, a study sheet that outlines what needs to be known for the test.
Basic Facts:  The Saxon Math program stresses knowledge and memorization of the basic math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and, eventually, division.  You can help your child to learn these facts through practice at home.  Flashcards are a good tool to help practice math facts.  5-10 minutes of practice with flashcards each night could help your child tremendously.
Grades:  Number grades are given on the children’s report cards each quarter.  Grades will be determined based on quiz/test scores, homework, and performance in class.
Book Orders:  Each month, I will send home “Book Order” forms.  “Book Orders” are a great way to buy books at very reasonable prices.  There are books priced even as low as $0.50 and $0.95!  If you wish to purchase books for your child, through the book orders, please return your order and money by the due date.
Website:  I keep an updated web page for our classroom on the school website.  The address for the school website is www.chateaugay.org.  Once you are there, click on “K-12 Faculty” and then on “Grade 4 - Mrs. Jones”.
Notes sent home:  Please remember to look for some sort of letter/note each Friday.  Information will be given about upcoming quizzes/tests/events in the classroom.  I send a letter home every Friday.
Questions/Concerns:  If you have any questions or concerns, at any time throughout the school year, please feel free to contact me.  Let’s keep the lines of communication open!  My number at home is 497-3452.  You can also reach me at school or via email at mjones@mail.fehb.org
