9/29/05 - Mrs. Cartier's kindergarten class visited Mrs. Gardiner's food prep class this morning to prepare apple scones.  The children enjoyed rolling out the scones and will eat them later for snacks.  The question is....where is mine? Pictures

ITO Food Preparation

Overview of Course
Goal-
This course is designed to introduce students to the realities of the working world. Working Citizen/Personal Resource Management seeks to develop progressive skills and behaviors that will help young people integrate their role within the workplace, the home, and the community. Students will acquire a cleat perception of how different environments influence life systems. They will be able to manage information and utilize resources efficiently, while assessing personal skills and limitations. 

In order to become integrated working citizens, students will learn and apply concepts in the effective management of personal resources which include: Energy, knowledge, skills, creativity, time, and financial resources. Students will have the competencies necessary for career and occupational selection, acquisition, and maintenance. They will also be able to manage resources as productive workers, contributing family members, and self-sufficient individuals.

Course Objectives:

Students will: 

  • describe the role of food in growth, maintenance, and functioning of the body.

  • Explain the factors that must be considered in making a plan for weight loss, weight gain, and weight maintenance.

  • Perform the basic skills and techniques for food preparation.

  • apply nutrition concepts to daily living.

  • explore the employment opportunities related to food preparation and nutrition.

  • apply the steps of decision making process in selection and preparing food for good nutrition and health.

Introduction to Occupations New York State Standards

Standard 1: Career Development
Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work and explore career options, and relate personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to future career decisions.

Standard 2:    Integrated Learning
Students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace and other settings. 

Standard 3:    Universal Foundation Skills
Students will demonstrate mastery of the foundations skills and competencies essential for success in the workplace. 

Home and Career Skills 7 and  Learning Standards

Standard 1: Personal Health and Fitness
Students will use an understanding of the elementary of good nutrition to plan appropriate diets for themselves and others. They will know and use the appropriate tools and technologies for safe and healthy food preparation.

Standard 2:    A Safe and Healthy Environment
Students will know the basic principles of home and community safety. They can demonstrate the skills necessary to maintain their homes and workplaces in a safe a comfortable condition. They can provide a safe and nurturing environment for themselves and others.

Standard 3:    Resource Management
Students will understand and be able to manage personal resources  of talent, time, energy, and money and make effective decisions in order to balance their obligations to work, family, and self. they will nurture and support positive relationships in their homes, workplaces, and communities. They will develop and use their abilities to contribute to society through pursuit of a career and commitment to long-range academic futures. They will know and access community resources.

The home and career skills programs for Grades 7 and 8 prepares students to apply the principles and process skills of decision making, problem solving, and management to all areas of daily life. These include:

Personal Development

-Awareness of Self, and Relationship with Others.

Personal and Family Resource Management

-Consumer Skills, Financial Management, Nutrition and Wellness, and Home and Personal Environment/Living Space.

Career Planning

-Overview of Work, Career Plans, and Entrepreneurship.
